With Thanksgiving and then Christmas on the horizon, we’re all going to be invited more parties than we’ve seen since the halcyon days of summer. Whereas those parties were fun, bright, full of life, these upcoming affairs are going to be more intimate, cozier. As such, we’re going to need to put together a special kind of outfit that reflects the season and mood. Below, we take a look at a few simple rules that’ll ensure you look your best during the fall and winter party season.

Leave the Novelties
If you look back to the Christmas parties of yesteryear, you’ll find plenty of bright sparkling dresses on the woman, novelty shirts on the men. While quite a lot of throwback fashions have reared their head in recent years, this is one trend that can be left firmly in the past. Coming dressed as a Christmas tree might get some people turning their heads, but you're better off saving it for Christmas day with the family.

Simple and Sophisticated
Get ready to whip out that old favorite, your little black dress. Christmas parties are a great chance to keep things simple and classy, and there’s no item better to do that than your go-to item! MIx it up with different accesories like a festive scarf, a sparkling broach, or a dramatic pair of chandelier earrings.
Accessories Do the Talking
There’s always space for accessories, but they’re extra important when it comes to parties. Why? Because if you’re wearing a simple dress, then it’ll be your accessories that make your outfit stand out. It’s easy enough to do: add a pair of handmade pearl earrings to your outfit, and you’ll separate yourself from the crowd. Don’t overdo it with the bling, though: just one item will be enough. As well as your jewelry, you’ll want to have a bag that complements your dress. Parties are a chance to get creative and pull out something you normally don't wear to every so take a chance and add something eye-catching and unique to your outfit.

Know the Event
You’re going to wear two different outfits for a work party and, say, a family party. Before you get set on your attire, make sure you know what the dress code is. You might be able to wear the same dress to each event, but the tone of the party will affect accesories and outerwear.
Backup Layers
We’re heading into the coldest part of the year, and that means you’ll need to factor in backup layers to your outfit, such as your coat. If you look stunning, don’t limit your look by wearing a drab jacket. This is your chance to go bold and make a statement: take it!
