If there is one area that fashion magazines and models will always have one up on us mere mortals, it’s in the “complete” look. Style magazines and photo shoots focus on the entire look being presented, something that few of us have the time or inclination to do in “real” life. Instead, we tend to focus on a few key basics, stand-out garments or fantastically on-trend makeup. Who has time to focus on the entire image every day. You need a team of stylists on hand to achieve that.
… Don’t you?
Perhaps not. While the complete head-to-toe look might not be possible for general, everyday life, that doesn’t mean you can’t make that extra effort for a special occasion. If you want to put together a look that resembles the glossy fashion photography we all know and love, this sequential list can help you take steps to achieve your perfect head to toe look…
Step One: Hair
Clothes are important, but you can’t just rely on your wardrobe to ensure your look is pulled together. Planning your hairstyle ensures hat your outfit has a crowning glory.
- Practice a good hair care regime, including twice-weekly deep conditioning treatments. You don’t have to spend a fortune on these products; you can use standard olive oil for deep conditioning.
- Think about how your hair will interact with the neckline of whatever clothes you’re going to wear. As a general rule, the higher the neckline, the more important it is to tie your hair back: loose hair + high necks = a messy finished look.
- When styling your hair for a big event, make sure you use a heat-protecting spray. These are inexpensive but make a huge difference in both the look and feel of your hair.
Step Two: Face and Makeup
With your hair ready to go, it’s now time to turn to your face.
- All good makeup begins with good skin care; you need a good foundation (pun not intended!) for your makeup to sit on.
- Invest in a good skincare regime. Skincare products are notoriously expensive, but you can often get better deals by shopping online. Read a few beauty blogs for suggestions, then research the best price to find a comprehensive regime that works for you.
- Makeup is best applied with a focal point in one area, and minimum elsewhere. For example, if you’re going to use a strong lip color, then go neutral and minimal on your eyes.
Step Three: Clothes
Choosing an outfit depends on so many different factors, from the options available to you, to what time of year it is. However, there are a few key points to keep in mind:
- Clothes should fit you well to look their best. Have a tailor alter clothes if they don’t fit well off the rack.
- Keep an eye on hemlines and cuffs for any loose threads; trim them if seen, as loose threads can make an outfit look messy.
