Here is a room in our home before I added my own personal style. |
Color
You see it on every home improvement television show, and read it in every home decor article; paint really is an easy way to change the look and feel of a room. Find an inspiration piece for your room that you really love; a pillow, a rug, curtains, a throw, or some other special piece. Take the inspiration piece to your local home improvement store and find a few paint chips that match well with it. Take some time to mull it over by bringing the paint chips home and putting them on the floor of the room that will be painted to see which colors look best with your current flooring. Narrow your choices down to your favorite two and purchase two sample containers. Paint two swatches on the walls of the room you will be painting. Paint sometimes translates differently from a paint chip to a wall depending on the artificial lighting in the room, as well as the natural lighting from windows. Pick your favorite from you two samples and get to painting. A word to the wise: if you are a person who likes to change your decor often; consider more neutral toned paint. This will make it easier to transition to different accessories as the seasons change.
Lighting
Lighting is so often overlooked when it comes to giving a room personal style. Don't just consider lamps, but also consider the builder grade fixtures that are already in your home. For a few hundred bucks, you can change the entire look and feel of the room. Take the time to research tips on lighting your space so that you can make the right choice with your purchase.
Fabric
Curtains, pillows, rugs, throws, are all accent pieces that can be found readily, changed easily, and bring warmth, texture, and style to a room. If your space is a little black dress, then the fabric accents in the room are the jewelry that will make the outfit POP!
For a more customized look try the following tips:
Hang curtains higher than your window.
For a more high end curtain look, choose panels that are longer in length than standard sizes.
Choose accent pillows for your sofa that are minimum 20" in size.
The bigger the rug, the better. Choose a rug that is large enough to tie your furniture grouping together.
Just like your wardrobe, your home is an extention of your personal style. Take some time to pick out color, lighting and fabric that creates the look and feel you want in your space.
